Save the Date for YP Summit 2018 in San Antonio, TX!

It’s time to dust off your boots because YP Summit 2018 is coming to San Antonio, TX next February 19-20 at the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk. YP Summit is a joint WEF and AWWA event for young professionals in the water and wastewater sector. The summit will tackle emerging issues in the water sector and provide programming to expand leadership skills.
Events will kick-off on Monday, February 19 with separate leadership workshops hosted by WEF and AWWA. There will also be a welcome icebreaker reception on Monday evening where young professionals can connect and network with their peers. The full day YP Summit will occur on Tuesday, February 20 and will conclude with an evening reception.
More details about the YP Summit and registration will be available at wef.org/yp-summit this fall. In the meantime, read our interview with 2018 YP Summit Chair, Vanessa Borkowski, about the benefits of attending and why young professionals should be excited about next year’s event!

Q&A with Vanessa Borkowski, Chair of the 2018 YP Summit

How did you first become involved with the YP Summit?

I first heard of the YP Summit when it was hosted in Phoenix, Arizona. I was living in Phoenix at that time but was unable to attend the event that year. All of my peers who attended raved about the program and all of the valuable new connections and material they gained from attending. After hearing this feedback, I jumped at the opportunity to serve on the programming committee the following year in Austin, TX. Since then, I have served as the chair of the programming committee (San Diego, CA - 2016) and co-chair of the planning committee (Tampa, FL - 2017).

What is your role with the 2018 Summit?

For the upcoming YP Summit, I will serve as the chair of the planning committee. In this role, I will work closely with the staff from the hosting organizations (WEF and AWWA), WEF Student and Young Professionals Chair, AWWA Young Professionals Committee Chair, and the YP Summit committee chairs to plan and execute a successful summit in San Antonio, TX!

Are there volunteer planning opportunities available?

WEF and AWWA are volunteer-driven organizations that mainly uses its volunteer base to plan its events. The YP Summit is no exception. This event is mostly planned and executed by our strong, enthusiastic volunteer base with support from staff members. Volunteers are grouped into the YP Summit committees who are charged with planning the event. The committees that are integral to the planning process are: programming, marketing, sponsorship, and local host.

While the committees make up most of the volunteer opportunities, there is also a need for day-of volunteers. Our day-of volunteers serve as table moderators who are responsible for facilitating and reporting discussions to the larger group at designated times during the program.

What role do volunteers play in helping plan the summit?

Our committee chairs and members have historically been volunteers. That being said, volunteers are paramount to the success of the YP Summit. We are happy to take anyone who is enthusiastic about water and wants to share their ideas. No experience is necessary.

What are the benefits of attending the YP Summit and why should young professionals be excited about next year’s YP Summit?

Apart from mitigating a strong case of FOMO, YP Summit attendees should expect to learn about emerging issues in our industry and connect with a diverse group of YPs. This program is intended to challenge attendees to think critically about our industry (present and future) and to establish lasting connections with peers. It also helps that the YP Summit is typically hosted in city with a warm climate for the folks up north!

Each year, we offer a letter that explains the YP Summit and benefits. This letter may be shared with your employer to help them understand how benefits of the program may be translated back to the office. Please contact me if you need a letter. Note: a role on one of the committees helps solidify your case to attend the YP Summit; please contact Vanessa Borkowski if you are interested in serving on a committee or as a day-of volunteer.
